Although of course it pays its homage to the Chrysler New Yorker sedan, it is still not to be confused with the famous street. Originally, Chrysler’s New Yorker sedan has a “special edition”, which was to be called as the Fifth Avenue. Complete with upgraded auto parts, the car performed surprisingly well in the market. Hence, the “Fifth Avenue” appendage now refers to a fleet of large models from the year 1979, to 1993. Ford lessens $2.4 billion on Volvo’s price tag

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

Ford’s Swedish subsidiary has just cost $2.4 billion dollars off its price tag. Ford believes that they devalued Volvo for a reason, one being the 23,000 Volvo units which will be cut in the production this year. This is due to an “adverse model mix” wherein vehicles do not seem to appeal to customers anymore. This interesting news presupposes a precedent question: is Ford decided to auction off Volvo soon? Ford has already denied recent speculations about it, and immediately clarified that decreasing Volvo’s worth is not a step towards a sale. (So let’s hope that we won’t see the Swedish auto parts maker in the market anytime soon.)

With other members of Ford’s Premier Auto Group (PAG) already auctioned off to Indian automaker Tata (Jaguar and Land Rover), Volvo seemed to be the last fleet to set sail. These predictions were stable despite the fact that Volvo fetched an increase in its year-on-year revenue and pre-tax profit for the year 2007. Just as well, Ford clarified that it won’t be building a production plant for Volvo in the United States anytime soon, just so the ever-increasing exchange rates could be solved.

As much as this has been a pretty bad news for the makers of Volvo parts, at least they can now hold on to Ford’s word when they say that they will be keeping the Swede. Will they be renewing their commitment by showing new strategies? Or will they continue to let Volvo struggle to find its own shore? This, ladies and gentlemen, is what we have to look out for.

Toyota Beats GM in sales for 2007

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

The Japanese automaker proves once again that it is the King of the automotive world as it has been crowned the World’s Largest Automaker for the year 2007. contrary to Automotive News’ report last January 23 saying that GM beat Toyota in global sales, it has retracted its statement and proclaimed Toyota as the rightful title-holder today, January 24. While Reuters has previously reported that GM sold a total of 9,369,524 over Toyota’s 9.366 million, Toyota was not scheduled to release the exact number of vehicles it sold globally until the latter part of January. Also, the carmaker was set to release its total sales records including their income from the auto parts they have sold.

Automotive News however, was quick to declare Toyota as the winner, simply because of a technicality. GM has included some meaningful figures amounting to 516,435 which were gathered from the Chinese Wuling brand. GM was not supposed to include these figures as they own only 34 percent of Wuling, the rest is owned by SAIC. Automakers don’t normally include these profit-generating details in their reports because otherwise, Toyota would have included Mazda’s sales and they still would have won fair and square. So, Automotive News subtracted the figures which gave GM a total of only 8,885,599 units sold. Regardless of whether we see Toyota’s exact number of sales or not, the Japanese giant has definitely outsold GM anytime of the year 2007. 2008 shall be a pretty interesting year for us as we buy auto parts from these two giants, silently placing a bet on who will be crowned as the king of the automotive world for 2008.
